Sophocles' tragedy of about 441 BC sets Antigone, who buries her outlawed brother, against her uncle Creon, who has forbidden it on pain of death. Divine law against civic law, family against state, and the stubbornness of both parties and the ruin it brings make it the founding drama of conscience against authority.
