Shakespeare's pastoral comedy of around 1599 sends the banished Rosalind, disguised as a boy, into the Forest of Arden, where she teaches Orlando how to love. Court and country, nature and art, the melancholy of Jaques and the wit of Touchstone are set against each other, and the play's real subject is the freedom that comes from playing a part.
