Shakespeare's shortest tragedy, from around 1606, follows a Scottish general who murders his king at the prompting of three witches and his wife, and is destroyed by the crime he cannot stop repeating. Ambition, guilt, the corruption of the will and the collapse of time and meaning are its themes, in the most concentrated language he wrote.
