Aeschylus's trilogy of 458 BC, the only complete Greek trilogy to survive, follows the murder of Agamemnon by his wife, her murder by their son Orestes, and Orestes' trial in Athens, where the Furies are persuaded to become guardians of the city. It dramatises the passage from blood vengeance to law, and from the old gods to a civic order.
