Homer's epic of the Trojan War, composed around the eighth century BC, covers a few weeks in the tenth year of the siege, from Achilles' quarrel with Agamemnon to Hector's funeral. It is a poem of wrath and grief, of honour and mortality, in which the gods are frivolous and human beings, who must die, are the ones who matter.
