Thomas Traherne, an obscure Herefordshire clergyman who died in 1674, left manuscripts that were found on a London bookstall only in the 1890s. The Centuries are numbered meditations on felicity: the child's vision of the world as infinite gift, the recovery of that vision through the love of God, and the argument that we were made to enjoy everything.
