Søren Kierkegaard, writing as Johannes de Silentio in 1843, returns again and again to Abraham on Mount Moriah, ready to sacrifice Isaac at God's command. The book asks whether there is a teleological suspension of the ethical, distinguishes the knight of faith from the tragic hero, and insists that faith is a passion no philosophy can explain.
