Euripides' last tragedy, produced after his death in 406 BC, brings the god Dionysus to Thebes, where the young king Pentheus refuses his worship and is torn apart by his own mother in ecstatic frenzy. It is a play about the irrational in religion and in people, and about what happens to those who deny it.
