Athanasius, the fourth-century bishop of Alexandria who fought Arianism for most of his life, wrote this early treatise on why the Word of God became man. His answer is that only the Creator could repair his creation: the incarnation and the cross defeat death, restore the divine image and make God knowable, in one of the clearest statements of classical Christian doctrine.
