Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein at nineteen and published it in 1818: the story of a student who assembles a living creature and abandons it in horror. The creature's eloquent account of his own rejection turns a Gothic tale into a meditation on creation and responsibility, education, loneliness and the limits of scientific ambition.
