Irenaeus, bishop of Lyons in the late second century, wrote this short handbook to summarise the faith handed down from the apostles against its Gnostic rivals. It walks through the rule of faith and the whole of scripture as one story, with Christ recapitulating Adam, in the earliest surviving Christian catechism.
