Dostoevsky's last novel, published in 1880, turns the murder of a dissolute father into a trial of his three sons: the sensualist Dmitri, the intellectual Ivan and the novice monk Alyosha. It contains the Grand Inquisitor and the argument over whether everything is permitted without God, and it is about faith, freedom, guilt and active love.
